Are you having trouble memorizing formulas for exams? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Many students find it difficult to remember all of the different formulas they need to know. However, with a little bit of practice and some helpful tips, you can memorize all of the formulas you need in no time. In this blog post, Edignite will provide some tips for memorizing formulas and getting started on the path to success in your exams!

    1. Write out your formula repeatedly

Instead of typing out your formula over and over again in text documents, it is much easier to simply write out your formula. This way you can handwrite the formula time and time again on notebook paper or even whiteboards.

    2. Use mnemonics

Mnemonics is an extremely helpful tool for memorizing formulas! For example, the first law of Thermodynamics (stated as energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only change forms) is probably the easiest scientific formula to memorize. A memorable sentence that uses great imagery can help you remember this formula for a test or quiz.

    3. Keep your notes in one place

There are two easy ways to make sure all of your formulas are written down and organized: Photocopy your notes so you can simply write everything out more than once. Or, type up all of your formulas on Google Docs and print them to have in one place.

    4. Make associations with the variables of your formula

When it comes time to remember the formula for density, an easy association to make would be with the word “dense”. You can imagine that dense thing are heavy and that there is more mass in an object with high density than in one with low density.

    5. Use technology like abctools to learn formulas faster

There are tons of apps out there now that you can use to help you memorize your formulas. Try to use the ones that have memory games so you can get lots of practice!

    6. Timing yourself is helpful

Timing how long it takes you to memorize a formula will allow you to know which areas you need to improve in when taking your exams. It also helps to see just how long it really takes someone else who is good at memorization to recite the formula aloud.

    7. See which areas you have trouble with and improve on them

Some people are better visual learners than auditory learners, so they perform better when learning formulas if they can draw them or see them in a picture. Other people learn much faster when they hear something being said to them, so they will probably do better-reciting formulas out loud to themselves or having someone else read them the formulas.

    8. Do not memorize only one way of writing a formula

You will always run across different ways of writing scientific formulas, so you need to be prepared for this. A good example would be the mass number and an atomic number of atoms. The atomic number is written as Z while the mass number is written as A. If you are asked which part of an atom is larger by mass or atomic weight, it makes more sense to just switch those two numbers around. Every time you see these symbols, remember that they switch places if you’re confused about which would be larger.

    9.  Be patient and know that it is a long process

It may feel like memorizing formulas is impossible, but if you put in the effort and time required to learn these complicated things, you will be able to get through even the toughest classes. If it helps, try to make up songs or poems about your formulas to help remember them.

Formulas are an integral part of any student’s learning experience. For many, the struggle to remember formulas comes not from a lack of understanding but rather in juggling all that is required for school and life outside of it. However, following these tips help memorize formulas and ace good grades.
