JEE Main Exam Pattern 2020

JEE Main 2020 will be conducted from January 6th to 11th while the second session will be held from April 3rd to 9th, 2020. Candidates can register for JEE Main 2020 January exam at https://jeemain.nta.nic.in/webinfo/public/home.aspx. The last date to submit the JEE Main 2020 application will be 30th September 2019.

However, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has introduced some key changes in the JEE Main paper pattern for the JEE Main exam to be held from 2020. Big or small, it is important to know the changes and how they impact the aspirants. So, Edignite is here to explain the new changes in JEE Main 2020 exam pattern.

Major Changes in JEE Main 2020 Exam Pattern

As per new changes, JEE Main 2020 exam pattern will now have a lesser number of questions than previous years.

Edignite listed all major changes in the exam pattern you should be aware of.

1. The separate exam will be held for B.Planning aspirants

   Till now, there were two papers namely Paper 1 for BE/ B Tech and Paper 2 for B.Arch / B.Planning for JEE Main exam. However, NTA has changed this now. There will be three papers one each for BE/ B Tech, B. Arch, and B. Planning. Paper 2 has been split into two parts, the eligibility criteria for JEE Main 2020 exam (B.Arch and B. Planning ) are completely separate now. Candidates with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics can apply for B.Arch whereas candidates having Mathematics with any combination can apply for B.Planning

2. Exam pattern for Engineering aspirants

   The entire JEE Main exam question paper was multiple-choice questions (MCQ) based. But now, candidates appearing in BE/ B Tech will be asked to solve 25 questions each from Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry instead of 30 MCQs. Out of these 25 questions from each subject, 20 will be MCQs and 5 will have answers to be filled as a numerical value. For every wrong answer, the MCQs will have negative marking, however, for numerical based questions, there will be no negative marking.

3. New exam pattern for Architecture aspirants

   The question paper for B.Arch will have three sections as Part 1 mathematics, Part 2 aptitude test, and Part 3 drawing test, just like before. However, Architecture (B.Arch) paper will now carry 77 questions instead of 81. The drawing test which is now for 100 marks, used to have three questions earlier for 70 marks. Now the drawing test will only two questions. The total marks for B.Arch paper would be 400.

4. New pattern for Planning aspirants

   For the first time, the B.Planning exam is going to held separately. Its exam pattern will also have three parts as Mathematics, Aptitude test (just like B. Arch) and planning based( objective type) questions. The B. Planning paper would comprise of 100 questions with maximum marks of 400.

5. Exam schedule

   Until now, the JEE Main exam was held on all days in two shifts, the first shift being from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm and the second shift from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm. Now B.Tech and B. Arch exams will take place in first and second shifts just as before. But, B.Planning will only be held in the second shift. And the candidates who wish to appear for B.Arch, as well as B.Planning, will have a duration of examination 3.30 hrs i.e; from 2:30 pm to 6 pm

6. Number of exam centers

   Last year, for the January attempt of the JEE Main exam, NTA conducted JEE Main at 467 exam centers in 258 cities. And the second session of the JEE exam is held in April in 282 cities. However, now JEE Main 2020 January attempt will be held in 233 cities including 9 abroad.

7. Marking Scheme

   As earlier, MCQs will be for 4 marks. One negative mark will be applied for one MCQs. However, numerical based questions will not have any negative marking. Every correct answer will get 4 marks like MCQs. Each of two questions in the drawing test will be of 50 marks.
