What is the percentile score for JEE?

The Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) aspirants are not aware of how is the JEE Main percentile different from the percentage of marks

JEE – Main, the entrance exam for undergraduate courses in Engineering colleges will provide a score based on percentile instead of absolute marks from 2019 onwards. The National Testing Agency(NTA), conducts JEE exam twice a year. NTA  will allot a different set of question papers to each batch. So, there were concerns that the different sets might lead to a difference in difficulty levels of the exams.

Percentile-based marking system provides a level to the aspirants as the score is generated after a comparative study of all the candidates. Hence, the difficulty level of the exam does not affect the JEE score.

After the percentile scores, ranks will be awarded to the candidates post the April cycle is complete. These ranks will be used to qualify candidates for the JEE (Advanced). The admission to the IITs would continue to be awarded on the basis of  JEE(Advanced) ranks

To avoid ties in case of similar scores, the percentile would be awarded up to seven decimal places. If scores are same up to the seventh decimal, the older candidate will be ranked higher.

After the first session of JEE (Main) is completed in January, the result will display four different scores (NTA scores). One for each of the three subjects (Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry) and the total score, which is percentile score, for that attempt.

The same repeats for the April cycle and a master percentile will be prepared and ranks will be awarded thereafter.

How is the percentile score calculated?

Percentile marks of a candidate in JEE (Main) reflect how many Candidates have scored below that candidate in JEE (Main) Examination.

The Percentile score of a Candidate will be calculated as:

100 x Number of candidates appeared in the exam with aggregate marks less than the candidate scoring the highest marks divided by Total number of candidates appeared the exam
